Riptastic Review
- January 6, 2005
When ripping music from audio CDs, it is important to select a product that is not too expensive, but has the features needed to allow you to do what is needed to be done. Factors such as rippable formats, speed, and quality all come into play. But how does someone determine this? It would not make any sense for someone to purchase a product expecting it to be what they want. Riptastic appears to know this. Whether you purchase the product or try the free trial, from the start you get the full-featured product. There are no "nag screens" or product limitations. The only restriction is a 300 minute restriction of ripped music, which is a little over 4 CDs of 70-minute music. More than enough to try. The quality is great, the speed is excellent, and the quality for the speed is outstanding. The advanced features are amazing, even the ability to rip "Track 0", which before researching this product I never even knew existed. This program is all I could have ever wanted in a CD ripper, and I am proud to have written this review and given it a perfect 10 rating. Riptastic is an outstanding program and has earned this rating fully.
TV-B-Gone Review
- December 12, 2004
I am all for a practical joke, but this is just a cruel prank. I was watching a 24-hour news channel and saw a gentleman talking about a new product that they were making. The product was called TV-B-Gone and it was a universal remote that would turn off virtually any television for your area. I thought to myself, "there is no way this can actually work" but I went ahead and purchased the item for a reasonable price of about $15 (including shipping.) At the time of my purchase Cornfield Electronics, the company that makes TV-B-Gone, was sold out of the product. I received my TV-B-Gone after a few weeks of eager anticipation to try it out. I opened the package and saw a fully assembled small remote control about the size of a matchbook and slightly heavier. I read the instruction on how to use it and went to the first television I could find. I was very excited when I turned on the television, pushed the button on TV-B-Gone and within moments the television was off again.
Alcohol Review
- September 14, 2004
Alcohol is what may look like to a novice "just another burning software". They are very wrong. Alcohol burns CD's. It can take a copyright protected CD and make a complete 1 : 1 backup copy for your records. If a CD has some sort of write error in it that may prevent you from burning it, this program will burn it. Also it has a very nice burning speed. If you were to have a 20x speed CD-ROM and a 20x CD-R then the fastest you could burn is 20x. Not with this program. Alcohol makes a "virtual" drive on your machine which acts like another CD-R is installed on the system. Then Alcohol takes the CD and creates and "image" copy onto the computer hard drive. From there it burns onto the virtual drive at up to 200x speed!
SpyBot Search & Destroy Review
- August 10, 2004
Ever had those ads that pop up on your machine but you are never browsing the Internet? This free product will help rid you of these problems. Unlike AdAware, this program searched mainly for bots. These bots are sometimes in the form of ad cookies, tracking programs, and ad delivery programs. While SpyBot does detect some items that AdAware does (and vice-versa), these items should both be installed and run to make sure your computer is clean of these problem programs. This program will detect ads running in many programs, including KaZaA.
Ad-Aware 6 Review
- June 26, 2004
Ad-Aware 6 is one of the best upgrades from Lavasoft in several months. This is most comparable to Ad-Aware 5.83 which has been around for about as long as there was a need to find spyware on your machine. Ad-Aware 6 has many improvements from version 5.83. Most notably is the Internet "live update" feature build in to check for new databases of known spyware. In previous versions you were limited to the database that came build in with the product at install. Now everyday they have a new list of known spyware to search for. When I first installed version 6, I scanned with 5.83 and 6 at the same time to see how they compare. Version 6 found about 50 pieces of spyware, and version 5.83 only found 1. Version 6 also lets you customize your search even more than before. This product is most definitely an application worthy of downloading. As always Ad-Aware 6 will find and remove spyware located on your machine.
America Online Review
- May 6, 2004
This product is not on my "best" list. There are several bugs and problems that AOL has not corrected for me when requested. For an average person or complete idiot (no offense), this is a great way to get on the Internet. AOL is very easy to use for a novice user. All you do is double click on it, sign on, and boom, you have a search engine along with keywords, welcome menu, e-mail, and Instant Messaging. Most ISP (Internet Service Providers) would never offer this in one package, but AOL does. I would recommend that if you do end up with AOL, and use a dial up modem, then get AOL when they have a special flat rate for unlimited access. If you use a cable, T1, or DSL, I would not use AOL.
As for the advanced users, beware. You cannot use e-mail programs such as Outlook Express with any POP3 or SMTP web based e-mail clients (Yahoo! Mail). This can cause major problems. AOL is also very popular, so finding a screen name that has anything to do with you or your personality is hard to find.
Good luck with Technical Support. Even though AOL has 24 hour support, they "read a recipe". What I mean by this is, They give you the same answer for the problem, or blame anyone other than themselves. There are many other problems you will encounter if you want to do anything advanced with AOL, so if you are smarter that the average computer book, then you should not use AOL.
Outlook Express Backup Review
- May 5, 2004
Finally, someone has developed a simple, yet reliable backup/restore solution for Microsoft's Outlook Express. Recently, version 1.1.3.154 from QSX Software Group was evaluted and received a 9.0 on a scale of 10. It was easy to install, and the wizard guides you through each step that is required to make a full backup or restore of your Outlook Express mailbox. One or all identities can be backed up including email messages, address book, news accounts, plus any folders, attachments, signatures or message rules.
MagicTweak Review
- February 8, 2004
This program allows you to change registry settings and hidden Windows settings using a graphical interface. This seems to have the novice computer user in mind who wants to change one really annoying setting while also grabbing the attention of the IT community with its more advanced setting features. This program allows you to edit your registry without the possibility of human error. No more searching for the folder, adding the right key, and then making sure nothing is spelled wrong. Unlike TweakNow (see TweakNow review) this program not only lets you set features on or off but allows you to edit the attributes of the features that are turned on.
Hostony Review
- January 22, 2004
Hostony is a web hosting company. At the time of this writing, Hostony is the web host for this website. A pleasant change from Feature Price, which was the first review to receive a 0 rating. Hostony has a few problems, but most are corrected within a few hours. Hostony works hard to keep websites up and offer competitive and reasonable prices. Customers were shocked as Hostony gave each customer a gift for being returning customers. Hostony knows how to treat their customers and will strive to keep them.
TDS-3 Review
- January 8, 2004
Unlike other anti-virus program or virus removal programs, TDS-3 searches for specific types of viruses. These viruses are some of the easiest to get, hardest to detect, even harder to get rid of, and worst of all, can cause the most damage to an individual, or even worse, several thousand people. Trojan horse viruses are just what the name implies. These viruses sit dormant on a computer. While there are many different uses for these viruses, the two most common uses are gaining access to a user's machine (a backdoor trojan) and denying another user from Internet access (a denial of service attacking virus). These viruses are very malicious and easy to create. When set free, they tend to spread rapidly. The reason for this is because normal virus detection and removal software (such as Norton SystemWorks from Symantec and McAfee from McAfee) do not detect these viruses unless they happen to perform a task that resembles other viruses.
Diablo II: Lord of Destruction v1.10 Patch
- December 31, 2003
Blizzard Entertainment Inc. and Battle.Net finally released the patch that had been promised for many months. This patch fixed many security flaws, including map hack and duping that was (and for the most part, still is) a problem. Many new weapons and armor items were added. This includes a new "World Event". This world event is very difficult and will take several people to accomplish. A new hero class was created called Ladder characters. Improved items. Many old items have been redesigned to allow for better leverage. Skills have been changed (most alot weaker). With this change, comes "skill synergies". These synergies allow points placed in skills that are no longer used to be useful. Some skill synergies allow for increased damage, time, or increased abilities. These syneries also allow users some freedom to change options such as time that were before locked to a set value.
Graph Paper Printer Review
- December 30, 2003
Have you ever been working on something that required graph paper but all the stores were closed? This is a great program to create high class graph paper. Customizable features with items such as space between lines, colors of lines, size of graph, size of paper, etc. Not only is this product good for graph paper but also for such things as sheet music, scales, patterns, etc.
Diablo II: Lord of Destruction & Battle.Net
- December 30, 2003
Diablo II: Lord of Destruction is one of the first games of its kind. You create a "hero" class and go through the corrupted areas of a world killing the evil monsters that inhabit the wilderness. The game starts out very slow and is somewhat of a "learning session". Complete quests in each act. This is the only way to move up in acts. Some quests you receive rewards for, others nothing but the satisfaction that you did them. Then as you move through the acts, your difficulty increases. Finally after you kill Baal in act 5 you can move on to the next difficulty level. There are 3 difficulty levels in the game, Normal, Nightmare, and Hell. The only way you can reach the next difficulty level is to complete the previous one. The names are very descriptive.
Feature Price Review
- November 22, 2003
Feature Price is a "web hosting company". Unlike other web hosts which actually host websites, this host has a less known, dark, and very evil plan. Feature Price will try to deceive you in many ways. Doing a simple whois search, you can see that the sites 10 Best Web Sites and Domain Hosting Services, Hosting Reviews, and Top Host Reviews are all owned and operated by Feature Price - created to deceive the consumer into thinking this is a good and legitimate company. They will also deceive you by offering you a money back guarantee. This is a lie, as they will make up any excuse to keep your money. 40 technicians for "LiveChat" is also a lie as after 30 minutes on the LiveChat system at any time day or night you get disconnected. E-mail is unresponsive. All phone calls are hung up on. This is a very shady company that have the BBB, Florida Attorney General, and ICANN investigating them.
Unreal Tournament Review
- June 29, 2003
This has got to be one of the best games I have played. It takes a bit of time to get used to, but once you get used to all the different controls, you will be killing in no time. This has some of the best graphics around, along with enough maps and online players to fill a small tower. With an assortment of guns at your disposal, you will have no trouble killing off your enemy. These weapons range from hand guns, sniper rifles, rocket launchers, among many "hi tech" weapons you have never heard of. There is something for everyone in this game.
TweakNow Review
- April 24, 2003
Have you ever wanted to change a Windows setting but were afraid to change the registry settings because you might screw up your computer? Your worries are over now that TweakNow is around. This program is easier than ever before. All you do is scroll thorough the list of items it can tweak, find what you want to set, then check the box and you are done. TweakNow has a large range of tweaks from your control panel to system settings, from hidden Windows tweaks to Internet speed settings. This is a long overdo program. People now can modify the registry without worry of affecting the computer in any adverse ways.
